[2009/06/14 17:05] Clarise Beaumont: SL has been lagging today.
[2009/06/14 17:10] Clarise Beaumont: Tina can you welcome people tonight? We'll not be using voice chat mode again.
[2009/06/14 17:10] Tina Ubble: sure
[2009/06/14 17:11] Clarise Beaumont: thx kiddo... Barb is zonked out -- been very busy for genealogists here in SL, and only had 3 hours of sleep last night.
[2009/06/14 17:11] Clarise Beaumont: anyone know how to RECORD CHAT LOGS?
[2009/06/14 17:12] Constantine Kyomoon: I will be recording it this evening
[2009/06/14 17:12] Clarise Beaumont: thanks Con.
[2009/06/14 17:11] Clarise Beaumont: I have included the link to the website where I cross-posted the chat log from last Sunday's chat here.
[2009/06/14 17:12] Clarise Beaumont: This is the second time Randy Seaver has pointed to blogs about SL genealogy chats. Russ started the ball rolling with his blog entry about his preparing for cemetery trip talk.
[2009/06/14 17:12] Binbag Slonimsk: I was sorry to miss the evening with Drew Smith the other night, was it good?
[2009/06/14 17:13] Tina Ubble: yes, it was great to have book talk in SL.
[2009/06/14 17:13] Clarise Beaumont: just a sneak peek at what's coming down the pike -- just today I spoke with a new SL person and linked her up with the Caledon Genealogical Society here in SL.
[2009/06/14 17:13] Clarise Beaumont: and she will be doing a genealogy chat on the British Isles 2 X per month there.
[2009/06/14 17:13] Clarise Beaumont: as soon as well have details, we will let you know.
[2009/06/14 17:13] Clarise Beaumont: Tina, I am so GLAD you were able to be there to hear Drew Smith. He is pretty great guy.
[2009/06/14 17:14] Elyandra Waverider: I missed it didn't know anything about it.
[2009/06/14 17:14] Binbag Slonimsk: We'll have to coax Drew here Sunday nights, maybe we can lure him here with popcorn or skittles.
[2009/06/14 17:14] Tina Ubble: yes it was very last minute to the groups
[2009/06/14 17:14] Clarise Beaumont: Drew Smith in RL wrote a book called SOCIAL NETWORKING FOR GENEALOGISTS published by http://www.genealogical.com/ . He gave a talk about it over at the Genealogy Resource Center in Info Island.

[2009/06/14 17:19] Olivia Glenfadden: thank you
[2009/06/14 17:19] Clarise Beaumont: I'd like to especially thank Barbara for helping Olivia with some of the new things to do here in SL.
[2009/06/14 17:19] Elyandra Waverider: hiya olivia :) welcome. :)
[2009/06/14 17:19] Olivia Glenfadden: :-)
[2009/06/14 17:19] Clarise Beaumont: making people feel welcome at our genealogy spots here in SL is so much fun.
[2009/06/14 17:20] Barbara Collazo: thank you.
[2009/06/14 17:20] Clarise Beaumont: Remember who helped YOU the first time....
[2009/06/14 17:20] Barbara Collazo: Hi, everyone!
[2009/06/14 17:20] kaylee Korbitza: konnichiwa! :) Barbara
[2009/06/14 17:20] Clarise Beaumont: YOU can now pass it on.
[2009/06/14 17:20] Clarise Beaumont: and
[2009/06/14 17:20] Clarise Beaumont: that leads into our topic
[2009/06/14 17:20] Clarise Beaumont: for this evening.
[2009/06/14 17:20] Clarise Beaumont: GENEALOGY VOLUNTEERISM.
[2009/06/14 17:20] Constantine Kyomoon: Barbara, please say aye if you agree to this chat being recorded
[2009/06/14 17:20] Barbara Collazo: aye
[2009/06/14 17:21] Binbag Slonimsk: Barbara indirectly helped me find a mistake in a death date in my research on a brick wall ancestor the other day- now maybe I have more avenues to look into to see what I can find
[2009/06/14 17:21] Binbag Slonimsk: thanks barbara!
[2009/06/14 17:21] Barbara Collazo: you're welcome! Great!
[2009/06/14 17:21] Clarise Beaumont: And Barb's work as a volunteer here in SL really is appreciated.
[2009/06/14 17:21] Elyandra Waverider: that’s awesome binbag
[2009/06/14 17:22] Clarise Beaumont: Barb's work is exactly the type of thing that
[2009/06/14 17:22] Clarise Beaumont: I wish to discuss
[2009/06/14 17:22] Tina Ubble: Welcome Francescha
[2009/06/14 17:22] Clarise Beaumont: the best breakthroughs I've made in my research
[2009/06/14 17:22] Francescha Skytower: Hi
[2009/06/14 17:22] Clarise Beaumont: have been where someone else either had
[2009/06/14 17:22] Clarise Beaumont: transcribed or indexed
[2009/06/14 17:22] Clarise Beaumont: something
[2009/06/14 17:22] Clarise Beaumont: or had done research in the area on people who lived there at the same time as my ancestors.
[2009/06/14 17:23] Clarise Beaumont: Only a few times in these 30 years of research has anyone actually had EXACTLY my same ancestor.
[2009/06/14 17:23] Clarise Beaumont: how has it been for you?
[2009/06/14 17:23] Constantine Kyomoon: Hello Francescha, please say aye if you agree to this chat being recorded
[2009/06/14 17:23] Francescha Skytower: aye
[2009/06/14 17:24] Binbag Slonimsk: I find a lot on other's ancestors, and sometimes they have been given things not relted to their families but give me a clue for my own research
[2009/06/14 17:24] Clarise Beaumont: One time, I had someone send me a notice because of a posting I made on one of the old RootsWeb genealogy mailing lists. That person had several family photos to share.
[2009/06/14 17:24] Clarise Beaumont: BUT
[2009/06/14 17:24] Clarise Beaumont: If there hadn't been a volunteer to manage the mailing list, it would not have existed in the first place.
[2009/06/14 17:24] Clarise Beaumont: I get that BinBag....
[2009/06/14 17:24] Kilandra Yeuxdoux: Have my seat Francescha I may have to leave a little early
[2009/06/14 17:25] Clarise Beaumont: at least you are learning more about people who lived in the area at the time.
[2009/06/14 17:25] Francescha Skytower: thanks
[2009/06/14 17:25] Kilandra Yeuxdoux: You're Welcome
[2009/06/14 17:25] Russ Hazelnut: There's another seat
[2009/06/14 17:25] Clarise Beaumont: In the "Olden days" before the internet
[2009/06/14 17:26] Binbag Slonimsk: it also helps with migration patterns- when I can't find my own families path of travel, sometimes others have well documented ways their family traveled/moved around
[2009/06/14 17:26] Clarise Beaumont: people would join the local genealogy society where an ancestor once lived
[2009/06/14 17:26] Clarise Beaumont: in the HOPES of hearing something about the ancestor in that society's newsletter or quarterly.
[2009/06/14 17:26] Clarise Beaumont: Is this a factor in your research now?
[2009/06/14 17:27] Clarise Beaumont: Most of us tend to use the WEB more now, wouldn't you say?
[2009/06/14 17:27] Tina Ubble: yes
[2009/06/14 17:27] Kilandra Yeuxdoux: My family tried that route & got something amazing told them.
[2009/06/14 17:27] kaylee Korbitza: y
[2009/06/14 17:27] Francescha Skytower: I think so
[2009/06/14 17:27] Binbag Slonimsk: yes
[2009/06/14 17:27] Clarise Beaumont: tell me Kilandra.
[2009/06/14 17:27] Russ Hazelnut: I think so but also see if there are historical / archived copies of the newsletters
[2009/06/14 17:27] Kilandra Yeuxdoux: The family was a world traveler (United Nations of sorts) we have over 20 nations in our blood
[2009/06/14 17:28] Clarise Beaumont: Russ that is a good point.
[2009/06/14 17:28] Clarise Beaumont: some societies are electing to provide an index of their quarterlies online.
[2009/06/14 17:28] Kilandra Yeuxdoux: Including most of Europe, Canada, US & the tribal peoples
[2009/06/14 17:28] kaylee Korbitza: Our library has them from all over
[2009/06/14 17:28] Clarise Beaumont: What I'd like to see is more support of smaller local iniatives
[2009/06/14 17:28] Clarise Beaumont: the ones that are too small to receive the attention of http://www.familysearchindexing.org/
[2009/06/14 17:29] Tina Ubble: PERSI is great for finding stuff in the archives
[2009/06/14 17:29] Binbag Slonimsk: I unfortunately don't belong to any societies yet, but just by coordinating two counties where my ancestors were from for GenWeb, it has really helped me in my own research and to get a better picture of life in that area, and how closely all the families connected to each other
[2009/06/14 17:29] kaylee Korbitza: liveroots too
[2009/06/14 17:29] Russ Hazelnut: I found that a family 'newsletter' from the 1960's were in the National Archives
[2009/06/14 17:29] Clarise Beaumont: YES, PERSI -- the Periodical Source Index (from the Allen County Public Library in Ft. Wayne Indiana) is
[2009/06/14 17:29] Clarise Beaumont: an excellent resource -- as long as the genealogical or history periodical is part of the [ACP] library's collection.
[2009/06/14 17:30] Russ Hazelnut: Liveroots will have you look in a broader area then I might normally look
[2009/06/14 17:30] Clarise Beaumont: the Ft. Wayne periodical collection far exceeds that of the Family History Library in Salt Lake.
[2009/06/14 17:30] Tina Ubble: Welcome Drew
[2009/06/14 17:30] Drew Rodinia: hi, all!
[2009/06/14 17:30] Binbag Slonimsk: hi drew
[2009/06/14 17:30] Francescha Skytower: hi drew
[2009/06/14 17:30] Clarise Beaumont: hiya Drew Rodinia!
[2009/06/14 17:30] Clarise Beaumont: Have a seat.
[2009/06/14 17:30] Russ Hazelnut: Drew - this is being recorded .. please say yes or aye if you agree
[2009/06/14 17:31] Constantine Kyomoon: Hello Drew, please say "aye" if you agree to this chat being recorded
[2009/06/14 17:31] Drew Rodinia: thanks, Clarise!
[2009/06/14 17:31] Clarise Beaumont: Everyone -- let's take a moment and welcome DREW.
[2009/06/14 17:31] Barbara Collazo: Hi Drew! Thanks for the blog mention.
[2009/06/14 17:31] Drew Rodinia: aye
[2009/06/14 17:31] Drew Rodinia: Barbara, and thank YOU for the picture!@
[2009/06/14 17:31] Clarise Beaumont: We were just talking about your presentation on your new book SOCIAL NETWORKING for genealogists.
[2009/06/14 17:31] Drew Rodinia: speak of the devil, eh?
[2009/06/14 17:31] ankt Remblai: I did join the local genealogy group for Southern Illinois but nothing on my family whatsoever .... if your family is from the wrong side of the tracks it makes it very difficult
[2009/06/14 17:31] Clarise Beaumont: Tina said it was a worthwhile event. I am glad she could attend.
[2009/06/14 17:31] Clarise Beaumont: LOL Drew.
[2009/06/14 17:31] Binbag Slonimsk: yep- were your ears burning Drew?
[2009/06/14 17:31] Russ Hazelnut: Some of use would like to see / hear it
[2009/06/14 17:32] Drew Rodinia: Binbag, they must have been!
[2009/06/14 17:32] Elyandra Waverider: was that the one I missed earlier today
[2009/06/14 17:32] Clarise Beaumont: This is delightful to have you drop in.
[2009/06/14 17:32] Kilandra Yeuxdoux: My research work has been with the links here lately: http://ww2.ikeepbookmarks.com/browse.asp?folder=2476957
[2009/06/14 17:32] Clarise Beaumont: a CELEBRITY!
[2009/06/14 17:32] Drew Rodinia: Clarise, stop that. Stop that right now!
[2009/06/14 17:32] Elyandra Waverider: hiya drew
[2009/06/14 17:32] ankt Remblai: I use that as well Kilandra
[2009/06/14 17:32] Drew Rodinia: hehehe
[2009/06/14 17:32] Drew Rodinia: hi, Elyandra
[2009/06/14 17:32] Ageless Destiny is Online
[2009/06/14 17:32] Olivia Glenfadden: one of the very first things I did when I started researching serious over 30 years ago - was to join EVERY local Gen. Society where any of my paternal lies lived. I read queries, I wrote and submitted queries and it helped me tremendously
[2009/06/14 17:33] Clarise Beaumont: Drew -- we've been talking about genealogy volunteerism -- and how our best breakthroughs are because we were able to NETWORK with someone else's previous research -- maybe not on our specific ancestor but on the same locale.
[2009/06/14 17:33] Olivia Glenfadden: But as larisse said, now I don't use them at all.
[2009/06/14 17:33] Olivia Glenfadden: clariss I mean.
[2009/06/14 17:33] Clarise Beaumont: :-)
[2009/06/14 17:33] kaylee Korbitza: society membership is definitely falling
[2009/06/14 17:33] Barbara Collazo: I was very fortunate. Milwaukee Gen Soc found some obscure early marriage records and indexed them on their site, and my gg-grandmother's 2nd marriage was among them.
[2009/06/14 17:33] jjavaholic Parx: oh okay what have I missed?
[2009/06/14 17:34] Clarise Beaumont: And thank heavens for THOSE volunteers who compiled that index, eh, Barbara?
[2009/06/14 17:34] Kilandra Yeuxdoux: I can't afford my local groups anymore.
[2009/06/14 17:34] Drew Rodinia: Clarise, I agree... I'm on some very helpful county mailing lists
[2009/06/14 17:34] Barbara Collazo: indeed.
[2009/06/14 17:34] Clarise Beaumont: Drew, may I ask.... do you think that the social networking (online) is expediting research possibilities for genealogists -- or is it too impersonal to be useful?
[2009/06/14 17:35] Drew Rodinia: Clarise, I think we're still in the very early stages. Maybe too early to tell.
[2009/06/14 17:35] Clarise Beaumont: interesting.
[2009/06/14 17:35] Francescha Skytower: I agree with Drew
[2009/06/14 17:35] Drew Rodinia: But it does help isolated genealogists feel more connected to others.
[2009/06/14 17:35] Clarise Beaumont: certainly the tried and true RootsWeb mailing lists for localities where our ancestors once lived have given me some insight leading to breakthroughs.
[2009/06/14 17:36] jjavaholic Parx: only if the [email] accounts are open and become dead but still public will they be of use to the ages
[2009/06/14 17:36] Drew Rodinia: Might help older genealogists who can't easily physically travel to local society meetings.
[2009/06/14 17:36] Russ Hazelnut: With some of our local resources (libraries) cutting back in hours, due to economy, we need to more effectively use the new resources
[2009/06/14 17:36] Clarise Beaumont: yes -- pulling those isolated into the conversation... each has something valuable to add to the discussion about how best to tackle research in a specific area or time period.
[2009/06/14 17:36] Drew Rodinia: A lot of our members don't drive or can't drive at night.
[2009/06/14 17:36] Clarise Beaumont: great point, Drew.
[2009/06/14 17:36] Clarise Beaumont: Russ -- if the libraries are cutting back hours...
[2009/06/14 17:36] Clarise Beaumont: we need to be especially cautious when calling or writing to make inquiries.
[2009/06/14 17:37] Russ Hazelnut: You bet .. or volunteer
[2009/06/14 17:37] Clarise Beaumont: (libraries, courthouses, archives, including national arcives (US)....)
[2009/06/14 17:37] Kilandra Yeuxdoux: Libraries are hurting all over the place. Its not always hours they are cutting. It is also even the volunteers we need at them
[2009/06/14 17:37] Clarise Beaumont: good point.
[2009/06/14 17:37] Constantine Kyomoon: It would be interesting to see some Gen. Soc. tweet during their monthly meetings
[2009/06/14 17:37] Clarise Beaumont: With less paid man hours to answer queries
[2009/06/14 17:37] Binbag Slonimsk: I have a USGenWeb question for anyone- I want to incorporate social networking and bookmarking on my two county pages- would any of you find something like that potentially useful? (I mean like Facebook fan group or using delicious to bookmark important links)
[2009/06/14 17:37] Clarise Beaumont: an increase in volunteerism would take up the slack.
[2009/06/14 17:37] Clarise Beaumont: cool idea, Con.
[2009/06/14 17:38] Tina Ubble: What about a Facebook group Binbag?
[2009/06/14 17:38] Tina Ubble: Let people post queries and links
[2009/06/14 17:38] Kilandra Yeuxdoux: I'd actually advocate for people to have 2 accounts on Facebook. One for the public if they want. Then one for genealogy alone.
[2009/06/14 17:38] Binbag Slonimsk: I want to create a space where more researchers in that county can connect with each other, not just email me with a question I might not have an answer to
[2009/06/14 17:38] Barbara Collazo: good idea.
[2009/06/14 17:39] Clarise Beaumont: Binbag -- I think providing links of any sort will prove useful on your USGenWeb site --- I have links to subscription only databases at Ancestry.com.
[2009/06/14 17:39] Constantine Kyomoon: Binbag... you may want to look at Ning.com, where you can create your own social network for a specific topic
[2009/06/14 17:39] Clarise Beaumont: Drew, as a [RL] instructor at the University of South Florida, you've seen a lot of librarians come through the ranks... what are some of the things we can do to help librarians ad archivist do their job, but still meet our needs as researchers?
[2009/06/14 17:39] Binbag Slonimsk: on Facebook I would do a closed/moderated group so just people who were researching there could join and monitor new posts
[2009/06/14 17:40] Drew Rodinia: Clarise, I think one of the most important things is attitude. Looking at the librarian/archivist as a colleague...
[2009/06/14 17:40] Drew Rodinia: instead of as someone providing a service.
[2009/06/14 17:40] Clarise Beaumont: interesting angle to improve our attitude, and be understanding.
[2009/06/14 17:40] Drew Rodinia: And beyond that, sharing the research goal is very helpful.
[2009/06/14 17:40] Drew Rodinia: Sometimes the librarian/archivist may know of other relevant resources.
[2009/06/14 17:41] Clarise Beaumont: sharing succinctly ...
[2009/06/14 17:41] Drew Rodinia: Of course, volunteering at libraries and archives is a big help, too.
[2009/06/14 17:41] Russ Hazelnut: Drew - Are libraries looking for volunteers and if so, might that help them stay open (hours wise)?
[2009/06/14 17:41] Drew Rodinia: Such as providing an Ask A Genealogist service.
[2009/06/14 17:41] Clarise Beaumont: we hope the librarian or archivist may know of more record groups.
[2009/06/14 17:41] Drew Rodinia: Russ, at the very least, volunteering during the busiest times is helpful...
[2009/06/14 17:41] Drew Rodinia: with budget cuts, staffing may be bare bones.
[2009/06/14 17:41] Kilandra Yeuxdoux: It depends upon the library & archives too. I have one near me that has orders to not have volunteers help people.
[2009/06/14 17:42] Russ Hazelnut: Thank you
[2009/06/14 17:42] Clarise Beaumont: and saving the librarians from having to reshelve?
[2009/06/14 17:42] Drew Rodinia: Kilandra, yes, it will vary from institution to institution.
[2009/06/14 17:42] Barbara Collazo: Backbreaking work.
[2009/06/14 17:42] Drew Rodinia: Clarise, oh, don't reshelve. Many libraries figure their usage from reshelving.
[2009/06/14 17:42] Kilandra Yeuxdoux: I've been in libraries for almost 28 years
[2009/06/14 17:42] Clarise Beaumont: good point
[2009/06/14 17:42] Russ Hazelnut: Barbara - time consuming work
[2009/06/14 17:42] Clarise Beaumont: our volunteers in the Manatee Central public library are specifically trained.
[2009/06/14 17:43] Clarise Beaumont: and do that reporting.
[2009/06/14 17:43] Clarise Beaumont: glad you made the distinction.
[2009/06/14 17:43] Elyandra Waverider: Clarise, our library has to count the books used each time they reshelve something to do with their funding
[2009/06/14 17:43] Clarise Beaumont nods.
[2009/06/14 17:43] kaylee Korbitza: Libraries are terribly underfunded. They can use all the help they can get. Take it from a librarian. We try to help everyone, but sometimes time is limited
[2009/06/14 17:44] Drew Rodinia: Allocation of library resources is often justified by usage patterns.
[2009/06/14 17:44] Boscodog Galaxy is Online
[2009/06/14 17:44] kaylee Korbitza: we do that Elyandra. Statistics
[2009/06/14 17:44] kaylee Korbitza: y Drew
[2009/06/14 17:44] Elyandra Waverider: exactly drew.
[2009/06/14 17:44] Constantine Kyomoon: so to help libraries we should pull random books of the shelves for them to reshelve? lol
[2009/06/14 17:44] Clarise Beaumont: very good point -- we want every bit of genealogy reference works counting for future budget decisions.
[2009/06/14 17:44] Drew Rodinia: Constantine, ummmm....hehehe
[2009/06/14 17:44] Clarise Beaumont: CON -- you are a big help! LOL
[2009/06/14 17:44] kaylee Korbitza: actually, yes, Con
[2009/06/14 17:44] Kilandra Yeuxdoux: One last thing before I scoot is that librarians if not into genealogy may not understand some of the resources we need. So if you see something on a shelf that you think is a classic genealogy source - take it to a librarian and explain its usage.
[2009/06/14 17:44] kaylee Korbitza: and then help them reshelve them after they are scanned
[2009/06/14 17:45] Clarise Beaumont: well, I'd only reshelve under the direction of the librarian.
[2009/06/14 17:45] Russ Hazelnut: Listening to the news, just before coming here, folks are starting to use the Libraries more, esp for entertaining children
[2009/06/14 17:45] Drew Rodinia: Here's another tip to help libraries...find out when they have to spend their money, and give them specific lists of suggestions as to what to buy
[2009/06/14 17:45] Clarise Beaumont: interesting, Russ.
[2009/06/14 17:45] Drew Rodinia: They may have not have time themselves to figure out what books to add.
[2009/06/14 17:45] kaylee Korbitza: While my principal role is genealogy at our library, I find myself spending half or more of my time on the reference desk in the general areas
[2009/06/14 17:45] ankt Remblai: my local library is always busy and even has Sunday hours now
[2009/06/14 17:46] Clarise Beaumont: Our two local societies donate money when a member passes away -- to purchase a book in the name of the deceased.
[2009/06/14 17:46] Barbara Collazo: Our library system has specialized so most of the genealogy holdings are in one branch.
[2009/06/14 17:46] kaylee Korbitza: that helps me a lot, Drew. I order according to my patrons wishes a lot
[2009/06/14 17:46] Barbara Collazo: And the gen. soc. holds help hours there.
[2009/06/14 17:46] Drew Rodinia: Kaylee, and if you don't spend your budget, you may never see that money again.
[2009/06/14 17:46] Clarise Beaumont: I like that sort of grassroots assistance, Barbara.
[2009/06/14 17:46] Larkbird Parx is Offline
[2009/06/14 17:46] Kilandra Yeuxdoux: Most follow quarters & depends upon when the budget is set.
[2009/06/14 17:46] kaylee Korbitza: this is true, Drew. I have to try to spend every dime
[2009/06/14 17:46] Barbara Collazo: The gen soc also "stores" their library at the branch, where it's available for reference.
[2009/06/14 17:47] kaylee Korbitza: and while I definitely want to get what our patrons will use, sometimes I have to guess
[2009/06/14 17:47] Drew Rodinia: Our county library opened up two new regional libraries in the past few years, each with a genealogy room, and they are rarely used.
[2009/06/14 17:47] Clarise Beaumont: As we support our local libraries (mine is the Family History Library) We are praying someone is doing this in the distant places where our ancestors once lived.
[2009/06/14 17:47] Clarise Beaumont: are you talking the one in Sun City, Drew?
[2009/06/14 17:47] Drew Rodinia: Clarise, yes, and the one in Brandon (Bloomingdale)
[2009/06/14 17:47] Kilandra Yeuxdoux: Umm didn't they think of having a centralized room for the whole of the county
[2009/06/14 17:47] Clarise Beaumont: oh dear, that is sad.
[2009/06/14 17:48] Kilandra Yeuxdoux: Oh I get it - the 10 year option is being used for the genealogy stuff
[2009/06/14 17:48] kaylee Korbitza: Not only does a genealogy library need access to written texts, they also need to be able to provide electronic resources, such as Ancestry
[2009/06/14 17:49] kaylee Korbitza: and that can get expensive
[2009/06/14 17:49] Drew Rodinia: Kilandra, we have a main library that has a great collection....but we also have a large county
[2009/06/14 17:49] Clarise Beaumont: How about getting you local society to index the VERTICAL FILES of your local library?
[2009/06/14 17:49] Kilandra Yeuxdoux: When a library is built they generally leave 10 years of physical stacks growth space in it. Often using it for other things until it is needed
[2009/06/14 17:49] Clarise Beaumont: or the PHOTO COLLECTION?
[2009/06/14 17:49] kaylee Korbitza: Photos collections are expensive, but doable with some of the grants out there
[2009/06/14 17:49] Barbara Collazo: Tying back to Tuesday's chat, what about volunteering for a cemetery?
[2009/06/14 17:49] Barbara Collazo: Lookups, indexing?
[2009/06/14 17:49] Drew Rodinia: or to index the obituaries int he local newspaper
[2009/06/14 17:49] Clarise Beaumont: Thinking of the Tampa/Hillsborough library system, you ahve a wonderful historical photo collection Drew.
[2009/06/14 17:50] kaylee Korbitza: We have a group of 6 dedicated cemetery ladies. All worth their weight in gold
[2009/06/14 17:50] Drew Rodinia: Yup, the Burgert Brothers.
[2009/06/14 17:50] Barbara Collazo: Or even cemetery cleanup?
[2009/06/14 17:50] Clarise Beaumont: Barbara -- Fortunately our local genealogy society was tapped by a Boy Scout for his cemetery project
[2009/06/14 17:50] kaylee Korbitza: y barbara
[2009/06/14 17:50] Kilandra Yeuxdoux: Gotta scoot - have been given my alert already. Dinner
[2009/06/14 17:50] Clarise Beaumont: he HAD planned to us a wire brush and Clorox to clean the headstone.
[2009/06/14 17:50] Drew Rodinia: The USF Tampa Library's Special Collections just digitzed naturalization records, and our society is planning to index them.
[2009/06/14 17:50] Barbara Collazo: Thanks, Kilandra
[2009/06/14 17:50] Kilandra Yeuxdoux is Offline
[2009/06/14 17:50] Clarise Beaumont: byeeee Kilandra. Thanks for stopping by!
[2009/06/14 17:50] Russ Hazelnut: Take the cemetery volunteering one step further, get the information Online
[2009/06/14 17:51] Russ Hazelnut: I am working with a local cemetery to to that
[2009/06/14 17:51] Drew Rodinia: Russ, I agree....Find A Grave
[2009/06/14 17:51] Clarise Beaumont: Drew this is just the sort of thing that wouldn't see the lght of day if your society didn't push for this.
[2009/06/14 17:51] Russ Hazelnut: Will even volunteer to put it online
[2009/06/14 17:51] kaylee Korbitza: I've been working these last 5 years on a database.
[2009/06/14 17:51] Drew Rodinia: Clarise, well, we have a great head of Special Collections, too
[2009/06/14 17:51] Olivia Glenfadden: please excuse me but I must go too, our weather is not good and I need to shut down computers. Wonderful being here for my first meeting and I hope to join many more
[2009/06/14 17:51] kaylee Korbitza: It will contain photos of every stone, death certs (when available) and obits
[2009/06/14 17:51] Russ Hazelnut: I am talking beyond Find-A-Grave
[2009/06/14 17:51] Drew Rodinia: See you, Olivia
[2009/06/14 17:51] Binbag Slonimsk: nite olivia
[2009/06/14 17:51] Barbara Collazo: Nice to see you, Olivia
[2009/06/14 17:51] Drew Rodinia: Russ, how so?
[2009/06/14 17:51] Clarise Beaumont: Olivia -- THANKS so much for joining us.
[2009/06/14 17:51] kaylee Korbitza: Also short bios linking family members
[2009/06/14 17:51] kaylee Korbitza: Nite Olivia
[2009/06/14 17:52] Olivia Glenfadden is Offline
[2009/06/14 17:52] Tina Ubble: I've been working to index the Vevay, Switzerland county, Indiana newspapers for bmd info
[2009/06/14 17:52] Russ Hazelnut: I found a plot map of the Cemetery - They have some information in computers, I am trying to get the computer information on the same website that has the plot maps
[2009/06/14 17:52] kaylee Korbitza: Onething to remember when doing cemetery research, is that cemetery names sometimes change over the years
[2009/06/14 17:52] Elyandra Waverider: nice idea kaylee
[2009/06/14 17:52] Clarise Beaumont: so it sounds like we're preaching to the choir --- we understand the importance of grassroots volunteerism.
[2009/06/14 17:53] Barbara Collazo: You know, it sounds like preaching to the choir here. How do we encourage others to volunteer?
[2009/06/14 17:53] kaylee Korbitza: I heart volunteers :-)
[2009/06/14 17:53] Barbara Collazo: gmta
[2009/06/14 17:53] Barbara Collazo: :
[2009/06/14 17:53] Clarise Beaumont: LOL Barb.
[2009/06/14 17:53] Drew Rodinia: Is this the "preaching to the choir" drinking game?
[2009/06/14 17:53] Barbara Collazo: Care and feeding of volunteers is important.
[2009/06/14 17:53] Binbag Slonimsk: lol
[2009/06/14 17:53] kaylee Korbitza: Did you know that each volunteer hour given to a local library is worth approximately 20$ an hour?
[2009/06/14 17:53] kaylee Korbitza: and these hours can go toward matching grants.
[2009/06/14 17:53] Clarise Beaumont: I believe most people don't realize how helpful they ALREADY ARE... for instance. when BinBag wrote her article as a guest blogger about "using Google Patent Search" she helped at least two of my readers.
[2009/06/14 17:54] Drew Rodinia: Barbara, I need to work more on the feeding part for our society
[2009/06/14 17:54] Barbara Collazo: potluck?
[2009/06/14 17:54] Clarise Beaumont: LOL Drew.
[2009/06/14 17:54] Drew Rodinia: Some societies are very successful by providing punch and cookies at meetings!
[2009/06/14 17:54] kaylee Korbitza: So if you volunteer for a library, be sure they record the hours you spend
[2009/06/14 17:54] Barbara Collazo: My mom worked with volunteers. They often don't feel part of the team. Poor relations.
[2009/06/14 17:54] Drew Rodinia: Hey, at our main library, if you volunteer, they'll validate your parking
[2009/06/14 17:54] kaylee Korbitza: I try to include my volunteers in all decisions regarding our database
[2009/06/14 17:55] Clarise Beaumont: so support and genuine appreciation is needed?
[2009/06/14 17:55] kaylee Korbitza: sure they will, drew. They're worth big bucks :-)
[2009/06/14 17:55] kaylee Korbitza: yes
[2009/06/14 17:55] Clarise Beaumont: THAT is a good idea, Drew.
[2009/06/14 17:55] Drew Rodinia: Kaylee, they do! (at the adjacent parkign garage)
[2009/06/14 17:55] kaylee Korbitza: that's great!
[2009/06/14 17:55] Drew Rodinia: It's not cheap to park next to the local library anymore.
[2009/06/14 17:55] Clarise Beaumont: Places to volunteer include what?
[2009/06/14 17:55] Binbag Slonimsk: If I do research at a library, what can I do with the results of that research that might help the library itself, or at least help other researchers?
[2009/06/14 17:56] Clarise Beaumont: http://www.usgenweb.com/
[2009/06/14 17:56] Barbara Collazo: FHC

[2009/06/14 17:56] Drew Rodinia: and Find A Grave
[2009/06/14 17:56] Clarise Beaumont: if you aren't already using one as a patron.
[2009/06/14 17:56] kaylee Korbitza: Genealogy libraries, Societies, believe it or not funeral homes. Lots of time they have old records that need indexing.
[2009/06/14 17:56] Clarise Beaumont: http://www.findagrave.com/
[2009/06/14 17:56] kaylee Korbitza: they are goldmines for information
[2009/06/14 17:56] Barbara Collazo: Second Life :)
[2009/06/14 17:57] Clarise Beaumont: Kaylee -- yes from the records BEFORE computers were put in place.
[2009/06/14 17:57] Russ Hazelnut: isn't Worldcat another resource?
[2009/06/14 17:57] kaylee Korbitza: yes
[2009/06/14 17:57] Drew Rodinia: I have to run...thanks for the warm welcome and the social networking!
[2009/06/14 17:57] kaylee Korbitza: your local historical commission could use help too
[2009/06/14 17:57] Clarise Beaumont: Drew mentioned "ASK-A-GENEALOGIST at your local library
[2009/06/14 17:57] Barbara Collazo: Good to see you again, Drew!
[2009/06/14 17:57] Binbag Slonimsk: thanks for stopping by drew!
[2009/06/14 17:57] kaylee Korbitza: and the people who run the GenWeb pages for your county
[2009/06/14 17:57] Clarise Beaumont: thanks Drew for stopping by
[2009/06/14 17:57] Clarise Beaumont: see you in SoCal.
[2009/06/14 17:57] Clarise Beaumont: in RL.
[2009/06/14 17:57] Clarise Beaumont: LOL
[2009/06/14 17:57] kaylee Korbitza: Nite Drew
[2009/06/14 17:57] Russ Hazelnut: Thanks Drew
[2009/06/14 17:57] kaylee Korbitza: Thanks
[2009/06/14 17:57] Elyandra Waverider: nite drew
[2009/06/14 17:58] Clarise Beaumont: What a WONDERFUL surprise. I've known Drew since the old AOL days.
[2009/06/14 17:58] Clarise Beaumont: you can listen to his podcasts at: http://www.genealogyguys.com/
[2009/06/14 17:58] Clarise Beaumont: he and George Morgan do a fine job.
[2009/06/14 17:58] kaylee Korbitza: What Barbara said about needing volunteers in SL was very pertinent.
[2009/06/14 17:58] kaylee Korbitza: sp
[2009/06/14 17:59] kaylee Korbitza: sometimes it's hard to be here when needed
[2009/06/14 17:59] Clarise Beaumont: George is the chair of the Blogger's summit at the Jamboree in Burbank later this month.
[2009/06/14 17:59] Russ Hazelnut: Could we chat about SL volunteering some time?
[2009/06/14 17:59] kaylee Korbitza: and Barbara does a wonderful job
[2009/06/14 17:59] kaylee Korbitza: k
[2009/06/14 17:59] kaylee Korbitza: sorry
[2009/06/14 17:59] Barbara Collazo: And SL needs more than genealogy mentors.
[2009/06/14 17:59] Clarise Beaumont: Kaylee -- anytime [any of] you can hang out at the genealogy venues here in SL it is much appreciated --- We can help you build a display of the locality or ethnic group with which you have the most experience.
[2009/06/14 17:59] Barbara Collazo: New folk mentors also.
[2009/06/14 17:59] Clarise Beaumont: THIS will help even when you CANNOT be online in SL.
[2009/06/14 17:59] kaylee Korbitza: k thanks
[2009/06/14 17:59] Barbara Collazo: The newbie areas are very off-putting.
[2009/06/14 18:00] Clarise Beaumont: yes, they do better connecting with one of us-- at least we can sit back and talk ancestors, right?
[2009/06/14 18:00] kaylee Korbitza: it's nice to meet a person when you first come to SL
[2009/06/14 18:00] Clarise Beaumont: YES.
[2009/06/14 18:00] Tina Ubble: yes
[2009/06/14 18:00] Barbara Collazo: And not a vampire :)
[2009/06/14 18:00] kaylee Korbitza: y
[2009/06/14 18:00] Clarise Beaumont: WELL FOLKS ---- it is that time.
[2009/06/14 18:00] Clarise Beaumont: 6pm -- a short meeting
[2009/06/14 18:00] Elyandra Waverider: ROFLMBO Barbara
[2009/06/14 18:00] Russ Hazelnut: That went quick
[2009/06/14 18:00] Clarise Beaumont: THANKS CON for recording the chat.
[2009/06/14 18:00] Constantine Kyomoon: sure
[2009/06/14 18:00] Clarise Beaumont: it sure does when we have great participation.
[2009/06/14 18:00] Barbara Collazo: Yes, thanks.
[2009/06/14 18:00] ankt Remblai: thanks Clarise for the chat
[2009/06/14 18:00] Clarise Beaumont: thanks CON
[2009/06/14 18:01] Clarise Beaumont: and thanks to everyone for showing up.
[2009/06/14 18:01] Clarise Beaumont: Now I must sign off.
[2009/06/14 18:01] Binbag Slonimsk: it was quite a big group tonight
[2009/06/14 18:01] Tina Ubble: thanks everyone
[2009/06/14 18:03] Clarise Beaumont: goodnight everyone

[2009/06/07 17:20] Saleta Telling: Congratulations!
[2009/06/07 17:20] Constantine Kyomoon: awesome... congrats!
[2009/06/07 17:20] Elyandra Waverider: awesome. ;)
[2009/06/07 17:20] Veatea Destiny: congratuations Clarise
[2009/06/07 17:20] Clarise Beaumont: he is a genealogist and a conference planner, so we're pretty well matched.
[2009/06/07 17:20] Eliasdehart Sixpence: best wishes
[2009/06/07 17:20] Barbara Collazo: How he proposed, and you proposed...
[2009/06/07 17:21] Clarise Beaumont: thx.
[2009/06/07 17:21] Clarise Beaumont: Secondly,
[2009/06/07 17:21] Clarise Beaumont: Especially thanks to you, Constantine, and Russ for doing so much while I've been away for an entire month.
[2009/06/07 17:21] Veatea Destiny: Can i help you with decorations or clothing
[2009/06/07 17:21] Clarise Beaumont: You = Barb!)
[2009/06/07 17:21] Eliasdehart Sixpence: Clarise, I'd like to recognize Barb for conducting good genealogy sessions in your absence
[2009/06/07 17:21] Barbara Collazo: yw
[2009/06/07 17:21] Barbara Collazo: Kaylee also.
[2009/06/07 17:21] Clarise Beaumont: you bet Veatea, that would be fun. Someone has to make the cake!
[2009/06/07 17:21] Clarise Beaumont: yes.
[2009/06/07 17:21] Veatea Destiny: nods
[2009/06/07 17:21] Veatea Destiny: I can make the cake in SL (Second Life)
[2009/06/07 17:21] Veatea Destiny: =)
[2009/06/07 17:22] Clarise Beaumont: and I had lunch yesterday in RL (real life) with Skyler Goode, the owner of AoA where we meet here.
[2009/06/07 17:22] Barbara Collazo: It was nice to be able to have others share their expertise.
[2009/06/07 17:22] Clarise Beaumont: he was blown away by the growth you've accomplished this past month.
[2009/06/07 17:22] Clarise Beaumont: so THANKS and congrats.
[2009/06/07 17:22] Clarise Beaumont: OK, Veatea, we'll have you make the cake.
[2009/06/07 17:22] Clarise Beaumont: now as for the recent NGS Conference....
[2009/06/07 17:22] Veatea Destiny: hooray in sl
[2009/06/07 17:22] Barbara Collazo: and in RL too!
[2009/06/07 17:22] Clarise Beaumont: the National Genealogical Society holds 1 annual conference -- in a
[2009/06/07 17:22] Veatea Destiny: I make and =you a compelete set plates and all we talk later
[2009/06/07 17:22] Clarise Beaumont: different city each year.
[2009/06/07 17:23] Clarise Beaumont: this time it was in Raleigh, North Carolina.
[2009/06/07 17:23] Clarise Beaumont: next year it will be here in Salt Lake City, Utah. I hope to meet many of you there.
[2009/06/07 17:23] Clarise Beaumont: I DID meet with our very own Constantine Kyomoon in RL.
[2009/06/07 17:24] Clarise Beaumont: he had a both not far from ours in the exhibit hall, and we shared several meals.
[2009/06/07 17:24] Constantine Kyomoon: and you will again in a few weeks!
[2009/06/07 17:24] Clarise Beaumont: He was there to tell people about www.LIVEROOTS.COM
[2009/06/07 17:24] Clarise Beaumont: yes, we will see each other shortly.
[2009/06/07 17:24] CowtownMom Foxclaw accepted your inventory offer.
[2009/06/07 17:24] Clarise Beaumont: http://genline.com
[2009/06/07 17:24] Clarise Beaumont: I met with Kathy Meade from Genline.com
[2009/06/07 17:25] Clarise Beaumont: and she explained a new option available there that I WISH the other genealogy websites would offer.
[2009/06/07 17:25] CowtownMom Foxclaw: ok.
[2009/06/07 17:25] Clarise Beaumont: TRANSCRIPTION
[2009/06/07 17:25] Clarise Beaumont: but TRANSCRIPTION of only the part of a page you wish to transcribe.
[2009/06/07 17:25] Barbara Collazo: Welcome, Noelle, CowtownMom, have a seat!
[2009/06/07 17:25] Clarise Beaumont: here's how it works
[2009/06/07 17:25] Noelle McMahon: Thanks
[2009/06/07 17:25] CowtownMom Foxclaw: can't see them yet
[2009/06/07 17:25] Barbara Collazo: Welcome, subliminal!
[2009/06/07 17:25] Clarise Beaumont: Let's say you are looking at a page from a parish register of a christening record.
[2009/06/07 17:25] subliminaleffect Jigsaw: hi
[2009/06/07 17:26] Clarise Beaumont: there are multiple entries on the page, so you don't wish to transcribe the entire page
[2009/06/07 17:26] Clarise Beaumont: but at http://genline.com
[2009/06/07 17:26] Clarise Beaumont: you can create a box to specify the PORTION OF THE PAGE you wish to transcribe
[2009/06/07 17:26] Clarise Beaumont: the test you type becomes SEARCHABLE
[2009/06/07 17:26] Clarise Beaumont: so when you return to the site
[2009/06/07 17:26] Barbara Collazo: Chairs on either side of Elias and to my right.
[2009/06/07 17:26] Clarise Beaumont: or someone looking for the same person comes to the site,
[2009/06/07 17:27] Clarise Beaumont: your transcription can expedite the research.
[2009/06/07 17:27] Clarise Beaumont: Yes, CowTownMom, have a seat.
[2009/06/07 17:27] Barbara Collazo: Wow! Wish I had some Swedes!
[2009/06/07 17:27] Clarise Beaumont: .
[2009/06/07 17:27] Clarise Beaumont: .
[2009/06/07 17:27] Tina Ubble: me too
[2009/06/07 17:27] Clarise Beaumont: so basically while I am showing you the http://genline.com/ website (which has Swedish church records) about 17 million
[2009/06/07 17:28] Clarise Beaumont: what I find important and intriguing is the ability individuals have to
[2009/06/07 17:28] Clarise Beaumont: make it easier to find things there.
[2009/06/07 17:28] Barbara Collazo: Is it a bit like Footnote.com's annotations?
[2009/06/07 17:28] Clarise Beaumont: as it is that side offers the scanned images like you'd be looking at microfilm -- no index, unless the original record has a loose index.
[2009/06/07 17:28] Clarise Beaumont: similar in the way you can mark the page for your transcription
[2009/06/07 17:28] subliminaleffect Jigsaw: bye, sorry to interrupt
[2009/06/07 17:29] Clarise Beaumont: but different in that with a global search, you will be able to search for the text
[2009/06/07 17:29] Noelle McMahon: Is it a free site?
[2009/06/07 17:29] Clarise Beaumont: no -- most sites what have high resolution scanned images do charge a fee.
[2009/06/07 17:29] Clarise Beaumont: someone has to pay for the bandwidth and the servers.
[2009/06/07 17:29] Noelle McMahon: True
[2009/06/07 17:30] Clarise Beaumont: But as I mentioned in my blog earlier this week
[2009/06/07 17:30] Clarise Beaumont: http://blog.dearmyrtle.com/2009/06/national-day-of-sweden.html
[2009/06/07 17:30] Clarise Beaumont: there is a very attractive (though short-lived) access offering.
[2009/06/07 17:30] Clarise Beaumont: anyway.
[2009/06/07 17:30] Clarise Beaumont: IF other genealogy websites would make the annotations searchable
[2009/06/07 17:31] Clarise Beaumont: or even ALLOW for annotations (as per Footnote.com) or transcriptions (as per Genline.com) it will greatly open access for us.
[2009/06/07 17:31] Clarise Beaumont: .
[2009/06/07 17:31] Clarise Beaumont: .
[2009/06/07 17:31] Clarise Beaumont: Also at the conference I spent some time with the folks from http://www.ages-online.com
[2009/06/07 17:31] Clarise Beaumont: This looks like just another website where you keep your data, attach media files (photos, documents)
[2009/06/07 17:32] Clarise Beaumont: but they are working on a new option where if a professional genealogist is working with a client,
[2009/06/07 17:32] Clarise Beaumont: the professional places the item here, to use it for discussion with the client.
[2009/06/07 17:32] Clarise Beaumont: and then once the client accepts the work, the tree is transferred from the professional's account to the client's account.
[2009/06/07 17:32] Clarise Beaumont: You may allow or deny access as you wish
[2009/06/07 17:33] Clarise Beaumont: including view-only or
[2009/06/07 17:33] Clarise Beaumont: the ability to edit
[2009/06/07 17:33] Barbara Collazo: very cool
[2009/06/07 17:33] Clarise Beaumont: . It is from this website that I obtained a number of 1GIG flash drives
[2009/06/07 17:33] Clarise Beaumont: and would like to send them out free to everyone attending the chat tonight.
[2009/06/07 17:33] Clarise Beaumont: HOWEVER, you'll need to email mail me, so I can import it into my mailing program)
[2009/06/07 17:34] Barbara Collazo: Very generous, thank you, Clarise.
[2009/06/07 17:34] Clarise Beaumont: so if you'd like a free 1GIG http://www.ages-online.com flash drive send email to: Myrt@DearMYRTLE.com
[2009/06/07 17:34] Binbag Slonimsk: that sounds a bit like genealogical telecommuting- a great way to contact clients
[2009/06/07 17:34] Binbag Slonimsk: thanks Clarise
[2009/06/07 17:34] Eliasdehart Sixpence: nice :)
[2009/06/07 17:34] Tina Ubble: ty clarise what a great way to let us enjoy all the NGS material
[2009/06/07 17:34] Clarise Beaumont: please put 1 GIG in the subject line.
[2009/06/07 17:35] Clarise Beaumont: well, it is the folks at Ages-Online that we must thank. They had forgotten to hand out the flash drives at the NGS Conference. I met with them on the last day
[2009/06/07 17:35] Barbara Collazo: You have enough for everyone here?
[2009/06/07 17:35] Clarise Beaumont: and they handed me a bunch to share with you.
[2009/06/07 17:35] Clarise Beaumont: yes I do.
[2009/06/07 17:35] CowtownMom Foxclaw: is this data or software and will it work on a MAC
[2009/06/07 17:35] Barbara Collazo: It will work on a mac.
[2009/06/07 17:35] Barbara Collazo: It's a bit of hardware, a portable disk drive.
[2009/06/07 17:35] Clarise Beaumont: a FLASH DRIVE is something you plug into your USB port -- to keep files on
[2009/06/07 17:36] Barbara Collazo: Good for taking with you.
[2009/06/07 17:36] Clarise Beaumont: some people use it as a way to have a copy of their database
[2009/06/07 17:36] Clarise Beaumont: Today at church we talked about how the local LDS Family History Centers have reader/printer/scanner equipment
[2009/06/07 17:36] Clarise Beaumont: so you can save the cost of printing from microfilm or fiche
[2009/06/07 17:36] Clarise Beaumont: by scanning and saving on the flash drive instead.
[2009/06/07 17:37] Clarise Beaumont: In fact, the Family History Library here in Salt Lake City sells flash drives for a minimal amount.
[2009/06/07 17:37] Clarise Beaumont: that is how MAIN STREAM the use of flash drives has become in the world of genealogy.
[2009/06/07 17:37] Noelle McMahon: I work at a library in RL and we are looking into that too. It is pricey.
[2009/06/07 17:37] Noelle McMahon: I really like it though
[2009/06/07 17:37] Clarise Beaumont: It is a lot easier to carry scanned images of the documents you find on microfilm -- especially since pages of photocopies take up MUCH NEEDED room in our luggage.
[2009/06/07 17:38] Barbara Collazo: Trees are heavy, too :)
[2009/06/07 17:38] Clarise Beaumont: Interesting Noelle. I should tell you that the scanner is hooked up to a PC
[2009/06/07 17:38] Clarise Beaumont: hehehe LOL Barbara.
[2009/06/07 17:38] CowtownMom Foxclaw: I would rather pay for scans then copies on paper. even if it is pricey
[2009/06/07 17:38] Binbag Slonimsk: do you think libraries/archives would charge per document since they wouldn't be making money from using copy machines?
[2009/06/07 17:38] Eliasdehart Sixpence: very handy for storing files while doing online or database research
[2009/06/07 17:38] Clarise Beaumont: they charge for copy machines to pay for the cost of toner, maintenance, etc.
[2009/06/07 17:39] Barbara Collazo: Rootsmagic 4 has a feature where you can run the whole program from a flash drive.
[2009/06/07 17:39] Clarise Beaumont: The FHL does not charge for the use of the computer/scanner to flash drive option.
[2009/06/07 17:39] Noelle McMahon: We never make enough to cover our lease agreement
[2009/06/07 17:39] Clarise Beaumont: Oh ,dear, Noelle.
[2009/06/07 17:39] CowtownMom Foxclaw: but if they used a scanner then each time somone made a copy then it wouldn't have to be done again and the database gets built up over time.
[2009/06/07 17:39] Clarise Beaumont: Yes, Barb. That is an unusual feature, since most software programs require installation so the Windows .ini files are modified.
[2009/06/07 17:40] Binbag Slonimsk: do they have digital microfilm readers that would allow you to get a copy of a document that way?
[2009/06/07 17:40] Clarise Beaumont: actually what the FHLibrary does is remove all the scanned images at the end of the day. (If someone saves them to the hard disk, so they can place on a CD or DVD insread of a Flash Drive).
[2009/06/07 17:41] Clarise Beaumont: I think the digital copies are going on the net as we see at: http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start
[2009/06/07 17:41] Clarise Beaumont: that way the info is available 24/7 to anyone with internet access.
[2009/06/07 17:42] Clarise Beaumont: but since individuals are copying only a few pages from a 1,400 image microfilm, it isn't reasonable to rely on individual scans to do the job.
[2009/06/07 17:42] Noelle McMahon: I live in the midwest and at the Allen county library in Fort Wayne, they have a large genealogical collection, they have these microfilm/fiche readers. You can save the images right to your flash drive. I used it and really liked it.
[2009/06/07 17:42] Clarise Beaumont: FamilySearch is scanning a roll of microfilm in a matter of minutes.
[2009/06/07 17:42] Binbag Slonimsk: I hope state archives all get into doing this- the one in KY does not have anything digital as far as I know, and the genealogy room in the public library in Lexington just had old fashioned microfilm readers
[2009/06/07 17:43] Clarise Beaumont: Noelle, you are so FORTUNATE to live so close to ACPL -- they have the most extensive genealogy/history publication collection. Indexed in PerSI.
[2009/06/07 17:43] Noelle McMahon: I live in Michigan, but make the trek a couple times a year.
[2009/06/07 17:43] Elyandra Waverider: I can't use flash drives, well I can, but they are darn inconvenient.
[2009/06/07 17:44] Barbara Collazo: Stand on your head to plug into the back of the PC? :)
[2009/06/07 17:44] Clarise Beaumont: Oh BinBag, you have probably the same experience there as most places. And with the economic challenges facing county and state govts
[2009/06/07 17:44] Barbara Collazo: You can get a USB extender.
[2009/06/07 17:44] Elyandra Waverider: my Ports for them are in the back of my computer.
[2009/06/07 17:44] Clarise Beaumont: well, national even
[2009/06/07 17:44] Clarise Beaumont: we cannot expect much.
[2009/06/07 17:44] Clarise Beaumont: Elyandra, they have little EXTENSION CORDS for your USB port
[2009/06/07 17:44] Binbag Slonimsk: some keyboards have an open port on the side
[2009/06/07 17:44] Noelle McMahon: And Monitors
[2009/06/07 17:44] Clarise Beaumont: to bring access to the front side.
[2009/06/07 17:45] Barbara Collazo: Office Max has them, among others.
[2009/06/07 17:45] Clarise Beaumont: for a long time the FHLibrary computers relied on those extension cables. But all the new Dells have multiple USB ports on the front side.
[2009/06/07 17:45] CowtownMom Foxclaw: sometimes you have to be careful when buying them. The really cheap ones don't work that well
[2009/06/07 17:45] Clarise Beaumont: thanks for that suggestion Barb.
[2009/06/07 17:45] Clarise Beaumont: I agree.
[2009/06/07 17:46] Clarise Beaumont: since the flash drive doesn't need a lot of draw on the electricity to do it's job, a standard USB extension cable will work.
[2009/06/07 17:46] Clarise Beaumont: for bigger things like secondary hard drives you will have a separate power cord that comes with the hard drive.
[2009/06/07 17:46] Clarise Beaumont: there are also USB extensions that go from the one port on the computer
[2009/06/07 17:46] Clarise Beaumont: to perhaps six USB ports on the other end of the extension cable.
[2009/06/07 17:47] Binbag Slonimsk: since I use my laptop all the time, flash drives work awesome for me
[2009/06/07 17:47] Clarise Beaumont: kewl.
[2009/06/07 17:47] Clarise Beaumont: I do hope you will participate in http://www.FamilySearchIndexing.org
[2009/06/07 17:47] Barbara Collazo: I carry my data back and forth between computers and to the FHC with mine.
[2009/06/07 17:48] Clarise Beaumont: as a volunteer indexer. AS you grow in experience you may be asked to become an arbitrator -- who resolves issues between the two indexing jobs done for each page.
[2009/06/07 17:48] Clarise Beaumont: Items currently being indexed are reported in my blog as Paul Nauta from FamilySearch sends them out to me.
[2009/06/07 17:48] Clarise Beaumont: For instance --- see http://blog.dearmyrtle.com/2009/06/familysearch-4-june-update.html
[2009/06/07 17:48] Binbag Slonimsk: I wish I could do something like taht as a pid job, I'd be so happy!
[2009/06/07 17:48] Binbag Slonimsk: aid
[2009/06/07 17:48] Binbag Slonimsk: oops paid
[2009/06/07 17:49] Clarise Beaumont: me too, Bin.
[2009/06/07 17:49] Tina Ubble: it's great practice for reading old handwriting too
[2009/06/07 17:49] Barbara Collazo: great point!
[2009/06/07 17:49] Clarise Beaumont: I think of doing that as a way to pay my "genealogy dues" with the hope that eventually they will index records mentioning my ancestors.
[2009/06/07 17:49] Clarise Beaumont nods at Tina.
[2009/06/07 17:49] Barbara Collazo: If you know a language, they really need people to help with foreign records.
[2009/06/07 17:50] Barbara Collazo: I can do Norwegian so I'm helping on the 1875 census.
[2009/06/07 17:50] Clarise Beaumont: The scanning is done from microfilm or original documents, then FamilySearch elects to place some
[2009/06/07 17:50] Binbag Slonimsk: I've been doing that as a side project for GAGenWeb, but just haven't had the time to finish it
[2009/06/07 17:50] Clarise Beaumont: Scanned images as: http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start
[2009/06/07 17:50] Clarise Beaumont: this is where you will temporarily find the scanned images
[2009/06/07 17:50] Clarise Beaumont: some are not indexed, MOST ARE indexed (having gone through the FamilySearchIndexing process)
[2009/06/07 17:51] Clarise Beaumont: the indexes will ALWAYS remain free at FamilySearch.
[2009/06/07 17:51] Clarise Beaumont: however, the IMAGES may reside elsewhere, depending on the contract with the archive or church in question.
[2009/06/07 17:52] Clarise Beaumont: so keep thinking about that indexing as a good part of paying back for the help we get elsewhere in our research.
[2009/06/07 17:52] Clarise Beaumont: we've only got a few more minutes.
[2009/06/07 17:52] Clarise Beaumont: I'd like to say that a week ago Friday,
[2009/06/07 17:52] Clarise Beaumont: the article about Second Life came out in http://www.DigitalGenealogist.com
[2009/06/07 17:52] Clarise Beaumont: This is a subscription based magazine
[2009/06/07 17:53] Clarise Beaumont: which is destributed in .pdf format.
[2009/06/07 17:53] Clarise Beaumont: The editor approached me to do the article
[2009/06/07 17:53] Clarise Beaumont: it is titled GENEALOGISTS: Get a Second Life
[2009/06/07 17:53] Clarise Beaumont: and it was my pleasure to tell about the various genealogy groups here in SL.
[2009/06/07 17:53] Barbara Collazo: Constantine put a pointer to it on brickwalls.ning.com.
[2009/06/07 17:54] Clarise Beaumont: so if you find newbies have signed on as a result, do let me know.
[2009/06/07 17:54] Clarise Beaumont: Thanks, Constantine.
[2009/06/07 17:54] Barbara Collazo: We had several last week, Clarise.
[2009/06/07 17:54] Clarise Beaumont: Now for you newbies.... let's find out where your ancestors are from....
[2009/06/07 17:54] Clarise Beaumont: I'd like to keep in mind your research challenges when doing my own work, blogging, etc.
[2009/06/07 17:54] Clarise Beaumont: you never know WHAT one of us will run across to help the next one with.
[2009/06/07 17:56] Clarise Beaumont: <-------- just found a new-to-me Union Civil War ancestor -- by doing original documents research in Washington DC at the National Archives. There were 8 men with the same name, from neighboring states. But in looking at each file in person, I was able to see the listing of wife and children that I knew in the fmaily gorup -- to verify which was my soldier ancestor. Anyone else had any BREAKTHROUGHS?
[2009/06/07 17:56] Clarise Beaumont: (feel free to jump right in here!)
[2009/06/07 17:56] Clarise Beaumont: .
[2009/06/07 17:56] Clarise Beaumont: .
[2009/06/07 17:56] Barbara Collazo: Oh, you got it sorted out?!
[2009/06/07 17:56] Noelle McMahon: I am a member of the Daughters of the Union, a civil war group
[2009/06/07 17:56] Clarise Beaumont: yes, it was a BIG breakthrough for me. They all had wives with the name Eliza or Elizabeth.
[2009/06/07 17:57] Clarise Beaumont: I have three ancestors honored by my membership in the Daughters of Union Veterans as well.
[2009/06/07 17:57] Barbara Collazo: I'd like to remind everyone of office hours tomorrow. 4:30-6:30 at Just Genealogy. Several people are helping smash brick walls.
[2009/06/07 17:57] Barbara Collazo: Congrats, that was a big one for you!
[2009/06/07 17:57] Clarise Beaumont: pm I assume?
[2009/06/07 17:57] Barbara Collazo: yes, sorry.
[2009/06/07 17:57] Clarise Beaumont: yes.
[2009/06/07 17:57] Barbara Collazo: Mom went to dinner but I know she's from Texas and is proving up a DAR line.
[2009/06/07 17:57] Clarise Beaumont: so Noelle have you been here before -- perhaps while I was away?
[2009/06/07 17:58] Binbag Slonimsk: that's 7:30 eastern time right? I may have to come online if I get a chance
[2009/06/07 17:58] Barbara Collazo: Noelle is new this week, welcome.
[2009/06/07 17:58] Noelle McMahon: I have but not in a long time
[2009/06/07 17:58] Clarise Beaumont: WELCOME
[2009/06/07 17:58] Barbara Collazo: Yes, Binbag, eastern time is 7:30 to 9:30.

[2009/06/07 17:58] Noelle McMahon: Thank You
[2009/06/07 17:58] Clarise Beaumont: REMEMBER that genealogy events here in SL can occur in a variety of locations.
[2009/06/07 17:59] Clarise Beaumont: the Sunday night chats are held here at the Family History Centre.
[2009/06/07 17:59] Barbara Collazo: I believe Con has a chat this week, "What's a genealogist to do in SL?"
[2009/06/07 17:59] Clarise Beaumont: JUST GENEALOGY is where Barb holds her office hours, and where we hold a chat around the firepit on Tuesday evenings.
[2009/06/07 17:59] Barbara Collazo: Thursday at 5 pm SLT (Office Hours)
[2009/06/07 17:59] Constantine Kyomoon: Yes, hopefully I'll be ready by Thurs!
[2009/06/07 17:59] Clarise Beaumont: Constantine...
[2009/06/07 17:59] Clarise Beaumont: yes
[2009/06/07 18:00] Clarise Beaumont: Noelle, I'll give you the Landmark for JUST GENEALOGY. Con, can you give her the one for LIVE ROOTS?
[2009/06/07 18:00] Constantine Kyomoon: sure
[2009/06/07 18:00] Barbara Collazo: I wish I could make that, Con, I hope you'll do a transcript.
[2009/06/07 18:00] Noelle McMahon: Ok
[2009/06/07 18:00] Clarise Beaumont: Does anyone else need a landmark?
[2009/06/07 18:00] Constantine Kyomoon: It will likely be a VOICE chat, Barbara
[2009/06/07 18:00] Barbara Collazo: We are also having nightly "chillouts" over at Live Roots.
[2009/06/07 18:01] Clarise Beaumont: Also, I'd like to mention that the link to the UGG CALENDAR (UGG = Union of Genealogy Groups) is found on the tile behind you Noelle. (Just touch it, and it will open the Google Calendar.)
[2009/06/07 18:01] Clarise Beaumont: kewl.
[2009/06/07 18:01] Barbara Collazo: 8-10pm SLT. Genealogy or whatever comes up.
[2009/06/07 18:01] Noelle McMahon: thanks
[2009/06/07 18:02] Clarise Beaumont: Eliasdehart -- have you visited with Barb and the gang before? Or is this your first visit?
[2009/06/07 18:03] Barbara Collazo: Elias has been with us for several weeks.
[2009/06/07 18:03] Clarise Beaumont: Anyone else need the Family Histiory Centre tee shirt or landmarks to Just Genealogy?
[2009/06/07 18:03] Eliasdehart Sixpence: yes, but just over a month
[2009/06/07 18:03] Barbara Collazo: Elyandra about 1 1/2 weeks.
[2009/06/07 18:03] Eliasdehart Sixpence: thanks for the clothes Clarise
[2009/06/07 18:03] Eliasdehart Sixpence: my wardrobe needs updating :)
[2009/06/07 18:03] Constantine Kyomoon: I released FOURTEEN genealogy transcriptions today at http://www.LiveRoots.com (about 6,000 names)... includes Metropolitan Life Ins. death claims
[2009/06/07 18:03] Clarise Beaumont: wonderful -- tell Ol' Myrt here where you ancestors once lived.
[2009/06/07 18:03] Clarise Beaumont: where are your brick walls?
[2009/06/07 18:04] Clarise Beaumont: Constantine, you HAVE Been busy.
[2009/06/07 18:04] Clarise Beaumont: Way to go.
[2009/06/07 18:04] Constantine Kyomoon: thanks....
[2009/06/07 18:04] Eliasdehart Sixpence: Clarise, were you referring to my brick walls?
[2009/06/07 18:04] Eliasdehart Sixpence: Texas 1900 to Oklahoma 1910 for my grandfather
[2009/06/07 18:04] Clarise Beaumont: just wondering where you are doing your research.... what the challenges are...

[2009/06/07 18:04] Clarise Beaumont: We have gone over on our time, but I want to know where you are doing your research.

[2009/06/07 18:05] Barbara Collazo: Oh, Elias, talk to Kaylee and CowtownMom.
[2009/06/07 18:05] Barbara Collazo: Thanks for coming!
[2009/06/07 18:05] Eliasdehart Sixpence: yes I will
[2009/06/07 18:05] Barbara Collazo: Come again.
[2009/06/07 18:05] Clarise Beaumont: Kaylee is an excellent reesource for you.
[2009/06/07 18:05] Eliasdehart Sixpence: also New Jersey for a lead on my great grandfather
[2009/06/07 18:05] Eliasdehart Sixpence: yes, I agree about kaylee - very kind and helpful
[2009/06/07 18:05] Clarise Beaumont: so have US Federal Census records been useful?
[2009/06/07 18:06] Constantine Kyomoon: For anyone new to SL and in need of some L$, there is now a money tree in the Live Roots area...
[2009/06/07 18:06] Eliasdehart Sixpence: yes, for 1900 - 1930, but my grandfather changed his name so that is a challenge finding out where he was and why
[2009/06/07 18:06] Clarise Beaumont: http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start has 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900 , 1920 images and indexes
[2009/06/07 18:06] Clarise Beaumont: but only indexes on the 1880 and 1920
[2009/06/07 18:06] Clarise Beaumont: those are FREE.
[2009/06/07 18:06] Eliasdehart Sixpence: 'k thanks
[2009/06/07 18:06] Clarise Beaumont: also 1850 Mortality and Slave Schedules
[2009/06/07 18:06] Eliasdehart Sixpence: family came from Austria in 1880s
[2009/06/07 18:07] Clarise Beaumont: oh very interesting.
[2009/06/07 18:07] Binbag Slonimsk: Oh Clarise- do you know of anyone who has done research in the Puerto Rico censuses?
[2009/06/07 18:07] Eliasdehart Sixpence: so I know much of that
[2009/06/07 18:07] Eliasdehart Sixpence: except haven't found immigration for great grandfather - he came before the others
[2009/06/07 18:07] Eliasdehart Sixpence: to establish himself I think
[2009/06/07 18:07] Clarise Beaumont: For anything Hispanic you might look at http://www.somosprimos.com
[2009/06/07 18:07] Eliasdehart Sixpence: much guesswork filling in the story
[2009/06/07 18:07] Binbag Slonimsk: k thanks
[2009/06/07 18:08] Clarise Beaumont: Mimi Loszano does a great job of compiling references to record groups and resource for all Spanish speaking countries
[2009/06/07 18:08] Binbag Slonimsk: their naming conventions are really confusing- but full of family info!
[2009/06/07 18:08] Barbara Collazo: Ely is back, Ely, tell clarise where you're researching.
[2009/06/07 18:08] Clarise Beaumont: yes, Elias, you'd need to know the exact courthouse prior to Sept 1906, since the they were kept at the local level then.
[2009/06/07 18:08] Eliasdehart Sixpence: anyway still working on it and I need to utilize more the email lists to which I subscribe
[2009/06/07 18:08] Clarise Beaumont: hiya ELy!
[2009/06/07 18:09] Barbara Collazo: Elyandra is writing up her family, so far 150 pages of footnotes :)
[2009/06/07 18:09] Clarise Beaumont: have you lokoed at www.Footnote.com? They and www.Ancestry.com have useful immigration collections.
[2009/06/07 18:09] Clarise Beaumont: Yes, Ely spoke with me at some length before the meeting, before you arrived Barb.
[2009/06/07 18:10] Clarise Beaumont: I comend Ely for being diligent to accept reliable sources rather than merely bringing in an undocuments family tree from someone's posting online.
[2009/06/07 18:10] Clarise Beaumont: THAT is the mark of a true genealogist.
[2009/06/07 18:10] Clarise Beaumont: commend.
[2009/06/07 18:10] Clarise Beaumont: undocumented.
[2009/06/07 18:10] Clarise Beaumont: geesh, where has my brain gone?
[2009/06/07 18:11] Clarise Beaumont: LOL
[2009/06/07 18:11] Barbara Collazo: Last I heard, she was tearing her hair out because she had a transcription of a land record
[2009/06/07 18:11] Barbara Collazo: but the transcriber didn't note the original source!
[2009/06/07 18:11] Eliasdehart Sixpence: gosh!
[2009/06/07 18:11] Clarise Beaumont: typewriters came into beig too late, huh?
[2009/06/07 18:11] Clarise Beaumont: or gosh.
[2009/06/07 18:11] Clarise Beaumont: I did that in the beginning.
[2009/06/07 18:11] Eliasdehart Sixpence: source is everything for establishing authenticity
[2009/06/07 18:11] Clarise Beaumont: I copied a page or two from a book mentioning my ancestor Hans Joint Hite/Heydt of the Shennandoah Valley.
[2009/06/07 18:12] CowtownMom Foxclaw: Thank you for the shirt
[2009/06/07 18:12] Clarise Beaumont: BUT I didn'tcopy the title page and copyright info.
[2009/06/07 18:12] Clarise Beaumont: you are very welcome CowTownMom.
[2009/06/07 18:12] Barbara Collazo: She goes by Mom for short :)

[2009/06/07 18:13] Elyandra Waverider: Levi Pickerell married Susannah Rosannah Hitt in Frauquier Co., VA in 1809 any connection?
[2009/06/07 18:13] Clarise Beaumont: Note sure. But my Hans Joist Hite settled the Shenandoah Valley. His daughter married my Paul Froman.
[2009/06/07 18:13] Clarise Beaumont: There is a LOT of research completed about Hans Joist Hite
