[2009/06/14 17:24] Binbag Slonimsk: I find a lot on other's ancestors, and sometimes they have been given things not relted to their families but give me a clue for my own research
[2009/06/14 17:24] Clarise Beaumont: One time, I had someone send me a notice because of a posting I made on one of the old RootsWeb genealogy mailing lists. That person had several family photos to share.

[2009/06/14 17:24] Clarise Beaumont: If there hadn't been a volunteer to manage the mailing list, it would not have existed in the first place.

[2009/06/14 17:26] Binbag Slonimsk: it also helps with migration patterns- when I can't find my own families path of travel, sometimes others have well documented ways their family traveled/moved around
[2009/06/14 17:26] Clarise Beaumont: people would join the local genealogy society where an ancestor once lived
[2009/06/14 17:26] Clarise Beaumont: in the HOPES of hearing something about the ancestor in that society's newsletter or quarterly.

[2009/06/14 17:27] Clarise Beaumont: Most of us tend to use the WEB more now, wouldn't you say?

[2009/06/14 17:28] Clarise Beaumont: some societies are electing to provide an index of their quarterlies online.
[2009/06/14 17:28] Kilandra Yeuxdoux: Including most of Europe, Canada, US & the tribal peoples

[2009/06/14 17:28] Clarise Beaumont: What I'd like to see is more support of smaller local iniatives
[2009/06/14 17:28] Clarise Beaumont: the ones that are too small to receive the attention of http://www.familysearchindexing.org/

[2009/06/14 17:29] Binbag Slonimsk: I unfortunately don't belong to any societies yet, but just by coordinating two counties where my ancestors were from for GenWeb, it has really helped me in my own research and to get a better picture of life in that area, and how closely all the families connected to each other

[2009/06/14 17:29] Clarise Beaumont: YES, PERSI -- the Periodical Source Index (from the Allen County Public Library in Ft. Wayne Indiana) is
[2009/06/14 17:29] Clarise Beaumont: an excellent resource -- as long as the genealogical or history periodical is part of the [ACP] library's collection.
[2009/06/14 17:30] Russ Hazelnut: Liveroots will have you look in a broader area then I might normally look
[2009/06/14 17:30] Clarise Beaumont: the Ft. Wayne periodical collection far exceeds that of the Family History Library in Salt Lake.

[2009/06/14 17:32] Olivia Glenfadden: one of the very first things I did when I started researching serious over 30 years ago - was to join EVERY local Gen. Society where any of my paternal lies lived. I read queries, I wrote and submitted queries and it helped me tremendously
[2009/06/14 17:33] Clarise Beaumont: Drew -- we've been talking about genealogy volunteerism -- and how our best breakthroughs are because we were able to NETWORK with someone else's previous research -- maybe not on our specific ancestor but on the same locale.

[2009/06/14 17:36] Russ Hazelnut: With some of our local resources (libraries) cutting back in hours, due to economy, we need to more effectively use the new resources
[2009/06/14 17:36] Clarise Beaumont: yes -- pulling those isolated into the conversation... each has something valuable to add to the discussion about how best to tackle research in a specific area or time period.

[2009/06/14 17:37] Binbag Slonimsk: I have a USGenWeb question for anyone- I want to incorporate social networking and bookmarking on my two county pages- would any of you find something like that potentially useful? (I mean like Facebook fan group or using delicious to bookmark important links)

[2009/06/14 17:39] Clarise Beaumont: Binbag -- I think providing links of any sort will prove useful on your USGenWeb site --- I have links to subscription only databases at Ancestry.com.

[2009/06/14 17:39] Clarise Beaumont: Drew, as a [RL] instructor at the University of South Florida, you've seen a lot of librarians come through the ranks... what are some of the things we can do to help librarians ad archivist do their job, but still meet our needs as researchers?
[2009/06/14 17:39] Binbag Slonimsk: on Facebook I would do a closed/moderated group so just people who were researching there could join and monitor new posts
[2009/06/14 17:40] Drew Rodinia: Clarise, I think one of the most important things is attitude. Looking at the librarian/archivist as a colleague...
[2009/06/14 17:40] Drew Rodinia: instead of as someone providing a service.
[2009/06/14 17:40] Clarise Beaumont: interesting angle to improve our attitude, and be understanding.
[2009/06/14 17:40] Drew Rodinia: And beyond that, sharing the research goal is very helpful.
[2009/06/14 17:40] Drew Rodinia: Sometimes the librarian/archivist may know of other relevant resources.

[2009/06/14 17:41] Drew Rodinia: Of course, volunteering at libraries and archives is a big help, too.
[2009/06/14 17:41] Russ Hazelnut: Drew - Are libraries looking for volunteers and if so, might that help them stay open (hours wise)?

[2009/06/14 17:41] Kilandra Yeuxdoux: It depends upon the library & archives too. I have one near me that has orders to not have volunteers help people.
