OREM: Utah Valley PAF Users Group 11 Oct 2008

Hello everyone!

Thought I'd give you the heads up about a local genealogy society's upcoming meeting

Find out more about the UVPAFUG.

The Utah Valley PAF Users Group isn't just about PAF (Personal Ancestral File). It's a grass-roots, non-profit, tax-exempt educational organization, devoted to fostering the use of technology for family history. They meet the second Saturday each month except December. Typically the meetings feature a main presenter during the first hour, then things break out into individual classes for the rest of the morning. They have a computer lab, access to the Family History Center, and computer projectors to make it easier to see what's being demonstrated. That's where you can also find out about Ancestral Quest, Legacy Family Tree, and RootsMagic genealogy software, alternatives to PAF.

Members may check out or purchase DVDs of previous main speaker presentations. You'll find the listing of previous presenters here, including a .pdf copy of handouts wherever available.

Ol' Myrt here hasn't presented since clear back in 2006, but that's about to change. Here's text from the upcoming meeting announcement:

Practical Guide for Family History Consultants - presented by DearMYRTLE

The role of Family History Consultants is crucial during the much anticipated change-over to new FamilySearch, but what do we do while our long awaited “official” manual is still awaiting final signatures? Myrt offers suggestions to build interest among non-genealogists in the ward, tackle organization challenges, teach correct research principles though class participants have diverse ancestral backgrounds, and coordinate with other consultants in the ward and stake.

Bio:
DearMYRTLE is the nom de plume of Pat Richley, a retired post-secondary computer instructor. An active genea-blogger, Myrt is author of DearMYRTLE’s Joy of Genealogy (2006), and The Everything Online Genealogy Book (2000), instructor at DearMYRTLE’s Salt Lake Study Group, hostess of DearMYRTLE’s Family History Hour and the Family History Expos genealogy podcasts, author of the Teach Genealogy Blog, and coordinator for UGG (The Union of Genealogy Groups in Second Life). She recently presented at BYU’s 2008 Computerized Genealogy Conference, the National Genealogical Society, the Utah Genealogical Association 2008 Fall Conference and will serve as the dinner speaker at UGA’s 2009 Salt Lake Institute. Myrt last presented at UVPAFUG in 2006, where she spoke about “Getting from the Index to the Original”. You’ll find Myrt on the web at www.DearMYRTLE.com.

From the group's website we read "The meetings are free and open to the public. They are held at 4000 North 650 East (Timpview Drive) in Provo, Utah usually in the Cultural Hall. This building is known in the neighborhood as the "red church" and is just a few blocks north of Timpview High School on the east side of the street. If you would like to receive email notification of upcoming meetings, go to the UVPAFUG blog page for instructions on how to subscribe."

Happy family tree climbing!
Myrt :)

Sept 2008 Field Trip: DUP Historian's Office

Hello everyone!

It was great seeing some of you at the Utah Genealogical Association’s Fall Conference at the Family History Library in September. There were many course offerings, and hopefully some of them fit the bill for answering your burning research questions.

WHAT
Now, I’ve finally lined up the field trip to study the ancestor files at the International Society Daughters of Utah Pioneers Pioneer Memorial Museum. We'll go Saturday 18 Oct 2008 in the morning. We are meeting with both the current DUP Historian and the previous historian for special research guidance using the DUP membership files.

Normally the historian is available Monday through Friday, but she is coming in specifically to assist our group.

WHEN
8:45am – Carpool leaves the Crescent Park Ward Building, 11350 S 1300 East, Sandy, Utah.
9:30am – Arrive at the DUP headquarters, meet in the lobby.

Since some of you will be driving in on your own, please find the map with directions located at the DUP website www.dupinternational.org.

Let’s have lunch at the Gateway (or Trolley Square?) after about 2.5 hours of research.

RSVP – Please let me know by return email whether or not you plan to attend this event, so that the DUP can provide an adequate number of assistants. I’ve initially told them six from our group will attend. They are excited to be of assistance.

ADVANCE PREP
In preparation for this field trip we will meet Tuesday, 7 Oct 2008, the week before from 6:30pm to 9pm. We NEED A MEETING PLACE. Carrie has moved exercise equipment into her family room and there isn’t room for us anymore. Any volunteers?

We will go over the following:

  1. Locate ancestors on your pedigree chart that came to the Utah Territory before the completion of the railroad, 10 May 1869.
  2. Search the “History Card Index” for the ancestor by name at www.dupinternational.org .
  3. See also the Photo Index.
  4. Plan to view the ancestor files at the DUP, where you will learn more about original source documents used to arrive at lineage assumptions.
  5. Onsite photocopies can be made by the DUP Historian at 25 cents per page.

Happy family tree climbing!
Myrt :)
