Sept 2008 Field Trip: DUP Historian's Office

Hello everyone!

It was great seeing some of you at the Utah Genealogical Association’s Fall Conference at the Family History Library in September. There were many course offerings, and hopefully some of them fit the bill for answering your burning research questions.

WHAT
Now, I’ve finally lined up the field trip to study the ancestor files at the International Society Daughters of Utah Pioneers Pioneer Memorial Museum. We'll go Saturday 18 Oct 2008 in the morning. We are meeting with both the current DUP Historian and the previous historian for special research guidance using the DUP membership files.

Normally the historian is available Monday through Friday, but she is coming in specifically to assist our group.

WHEN
8:45am – Carpool leaves the Crescent Park Ward Building, 11350 S 1300 East, Sandy, Utah.
9:30am – Arrive at the DUP headquarters, meet in the lobby.

Since some of you will be driving in on your own, please find the map with directions located at the DUP website www.dupinternational.org.

Let’s have lunch at the Gateway (or Trolley Square?) after about 2.5 hours of research.

RSVP – Please let me know by return email whether or not you plan to attend this event, so that the DUP can provide an adequate number of assistants. I’ve initially told them six from our group will attend. They are excited to be of assistance.

ADVANCE PREP
In preparation for this field trip we will meet Tuesday, 7 Oct 2008, the week before from 6:30pm to 9pm. We NEED A MEETING PLACE. Carrie has moved exercise equipment into her family room and there isn’t room for us anymore. Any volunteers?

We will go over the following:

  1. Locate ancestors on your pedigree chart that came to the Utah Territory before the completion of the railroad, 10 May 1869.
  2. Search the “History Card Index” for the ancestor by name at www.dupinternational.org .
  3. See also the Photo Index.
  4. Plan to view the ancestor files at the DUP, where you will learn more about original source documents used to arrive at lineage assumptions.
  5. Onsite photocopies can be made by the DUP Historian at 25 cents per page.

Happy family tree climbing!
