Joining DearMYRTLE's Salt Lake Study Group

If you live in the greater Salt Lake City area and wish to join DearMYRTLE's Salt Lake Study Group, drop me a line. We have a planning meeting once a month, and have a field trip every month to a regional research facility. We recently visited the Family History Library and a brief report is listed here.

While the group is currently small enough to get together in a home, we have plans to move to a local library in the fall.

METHODOLOGY
Unlike instructor-led lectures, this study group listens to each other's research challenges, and hammers out specific avenues for future research, followed by onsite research at family history archives.

TYPICAL MEETING AGENDA
  • 6:30pm - welcome & overview
  • 6:4opm - member shares - The primary focus of the group is for participants to share 5 minutes of a research challenge, while Myrt & the group provide specific new ideas for research.
  • 8-9pm - instructor-led activity - Myrt combines her pre-determined agenda items with specific examples from the member shares to illustrate the use of a particular resource. For instance, with her planned discussion of How to use the Family History Library Catalog Myrt used examples of research challenges posted during the member shares and printed out catalog entries for several participants.
Field trips are fun & productive
Often researchers arrive at a research facility ill-prepared to use the valuable resources provided.

Making better use of time, Myrt's study group participants receive orientation two weeks prior to field trip day, and are given instructions on selecting specific record groups to view onsite. Travel time to the facility involves a practical and fun "pep-talk" to ensure researchers are ready to go once they arrive at the facility.

There is no cost to join DearMYRTLE's Salt Lake Study Group. All handouts and suggested links will be listed in the group's blog at: www.TeachGenealogy.com .

Happy family tree climbing!
Myrt :)
