DearMYRTLE's Study Group: Update 24 June 2008

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE!
Hope your summer is going well -- there is much news to report.

CATHY’S HUSBAND
First, and most important, Cathy Clark needs our prayers as her husband has been ill. He was hospitalized, and is now home, though from the report given in RS on Sunday, the doctor’s hadn’t determined the cause of his illness. Our hearts and prayers are with you both, Cathy. (She serves as the Family History Consultant in the Crescent Park 5th Ward.)

NEW MEMBERS
Welcome to three new members of our group:

  • Judy Park, Nadine’s friend
  • Rachel Hower, a DearMYRTLE reader
  • Arlene Hinman, a DearMYRTLE reader

WE’VE GOT A BLOG
Want to find out more? I’ve decided to create a series of blog entries based on our study group meetings and research challenges. This is also a great place to find links to handouts from the sessions you’ve missed. Find this at: http://blog.TeachGenealogy.com. You can also subscribe for free using your favorite RSS feed reader. I use iGoogle & Outlook 2007 to pull in the genealogy blogs I love to read.

WHO ARE THOSE LADIES, ANYWAY?
Several asked about the two beautiful women in the picture used in the TGB banner shown above. They are my maternal grandmother Frances Irene Goering and her mother Estelle Mae (Phillips) Goering circa 1907. Frances was born 22 Aug 1905 in Chariton, Lucas, Iowa and died 12 Jan 1974 in Renton, King, Washington. Frances married (1) Lowell Simpson Froman, son of William Gist Froman and Louisa Mae Higgins, on 25 Feb 1925 (at an undisclosed location) and they were enumerated in the 1930 US Federal Census in Precinct K, Wenatchee City, Chelan, Washington where their daughter, my mother Barbara Froman, is listed as a single female, age 1 and 6/12 years.
This screen shot is from Ancestry.com’s 1930 census image collection:

Their marriage ended in divorce. Frances later married (2) Dana “Mike” A. McDonnell and the lived in Tukwilla, King, Washington.

Frances’ mother Estelle Mae (Phillips) Goering was born on 30 Nov 1876 in Knoxville, Marion, Iowa and died on 11 Sep 1921 in Olathe, Johnson, Kansas according to entries in the Goering Family Bible in my possession. While researching 28 Nov 1999 at the Orlando Public Library, I discovered the Marion County Genealogical Society's bicentennial project was a book published in 1976 titled
Cemeteries of Marion County, Iowa
. There is an entry for ‘Goering, Estella Mae 1876-1921’ at the Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville, Marion, Iowa (Old Section) Block 14 lot 6. In May, after attending and presenting at the 2008 NGS Conference in Kansas City, I was able to travel north to Iowa and visit the cemetery. What a joy to find Estelle’s tombstone, show below, next to those of her parents and one set of grandparents. I only used my fingers to wipe away grass clippings and a little bottled water to brighten the inscription for this photograph, as I wished to be careful not speed up the deterioration process. (Wire brushes are out unless the goal is to obscure the lettering for future generations.) It was so hot, the water evaporated almost immediately.

NO MEETING IN JULY 2008
July is a traveling sort of month for many of our members, so let’s skip and meet in August on the third Tuesday – 19 August 2008 from 6:30-9:00pm, again at Carrie Keele’s home. If you need the address, let me know and I’ll email it to you personally. We’re taking our next field trip in September to the Church History Department. I will coordinate with them as to the date, which I assume will be a weekday during normal business hours. I know some of you work during the day, and that this may preclude your participation, but it is the best we can do.

If you try to contact me in July for assistance, do it before the middle of the month as I’ll be gone from the 14th through the 30th on the 2008 Legacy Family Tree genealogy cruise. I’ll be making several presentations and am thrilled to be meeting other genealogists from around the US & the world. Our trip around the Baltic Sea will be a great introduction to travel in those countries. We fly to London, take a motor coach to Dover and then go as far east as St. Petersburg. I can hardly wait.

We now have so many members that if we all showed up at the same time, we would not fit in Carrie’s family room. However, I think August will still find some of our members traveling, so I don’t expect to make the move to a larger meeting place until September.
